A Practical Guide to Starting Your Own Equality Circle

How to Start an Equality Circle

Practical Steps for Teens

Starting an Equality Circle is simple—but it can make a big difference. It’s about bringing people together to listen, share, and find ways to make equality real in everyday life.

Here’s how to get started:

1. Gather Your People
Invite a few friends, classmates, or teammates who care about fairness, kindness, or making a difference. You don’t need a big group—four to ten people is perfect. Everyone’s voice matters.

2. Choose a Safe Space
Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can talk openly—maybe at school, a park, a café, or even online. The most important thing is that everyone feels welcome and respected.

3. Set Some Simple Guidelines
Agree on a few ground rules to keep the space safe and kind:
- Everyone gets a chance to speak.
- No judging or interrupting.
- What’s shared in the circle stays private (unless it’s about safety).
- Listen to understand, not to respond.

These small agreements create trust—and trust builds change.

4. Pick a Topic
Start with something that matters to you:
- What does equality mean to us?
- How can we make our school more inclusive?
- How can boys and girls support each other better?
- What stereotypes do we want to break?

You can take turns choosing topics each time you meet.

5. Share and Listen
Each person can share their thoughts or experiences, one at a time. Don’t worry about saying the “right thing.” It’s about honesty, empathy, and learning from each other.

6. Take Action
End each circle by choosing one small step you can take—like standing up against gossip, creating a kindness wall, starting a poster campaign, or sharing what you’ve learned on social media. Small acts lead to big shifts.

7. Stay Connected
Meet regularly if you can—once a week, or even once a month. Keep it relaxed and positive.

You can also share what your group is doing with the Equal Ground Youth Collective to inspire others!

Remember:
Equality Circles are about connection, not perfection. They’re about listening deeply, learning together, and becoming the kind of people who lead with fairness and heart.
